Is a Photo Booth Worth It for a Wedding?

For most receptions of 75 guests or more, yes: a photo booth is one of the few wedding rentals guests actively use all night and take something home from. It earns its cost after dinner, when the reception loosens up and your photographer can’t be everywhere at once. For very small or very short receptions, it can be worth skipping, and we’ll tell you when.

We’re wedding photographers by background and we’ve run booths at hundreds of Louisiana weddings, so we’ve watched exactly when a booth earns its spot and when it doesn’t.

What a booth actually does at a reception

Once dinner ends, the reception changes. People move, groups form, and family members who haven’t been in the same room in years are suddenly together. Your photographer is with you, the couple, most of that time, which is exactly the job you hired them for.

The booth catches everything else: college roommates, both sets of grandparents, the cousins’ table at midnight. After hundreds of weddings, the pattern we see is consistent: the booth line becomes its own social hub, and the guests who’d never request a song or join a second line will absolutely step in front of a camera with three friends.

Three things make it worth the money in practice:

1. Guests take something home that night. With a portrait booth, that’s a printed photo with a layout designed around your wedding. Wedding favors get left on tables; prints with their own faces on them don’t.
2. You get the photos too. Every capture lands in an online gallery, so you see the whole night you missed while you were making the rounds.
3. It entertains without programming. No emcee required, no schedule slot. It runs alongside the dance floor for hours.

When we’d tell you to skip it

An honest vendor should be able to name these, so here are ours:

• Under about 50 guests. The line never forms, and the booth competes with the one conversation everyone is already in. Consider a roaming photographer instead, who goes to your guests.
• Very short receptions. If the whole event is two hours, dinner and toasts eat the window where a booth shines.
• When it would displace your photographer budget. The booth complements photography; it never replaces it. If the budget forces a choice, hire the better photographer.
